If you’ve ever needed a crown before, you probably remember how it usually goes: an impression, a temporary crown, a few weeks of waiting, and a second appointment to finally get the real thing.
If you’ve ever needed a crown before, you probably remember how it usually goes: an impression, a temporary crown, a few weeks of waiting, and a second appointment to finally get the real thing.
At Loo Family Dentistry, most crowns don’t work that way. Using digital scanning and in-office design and milling technology, Dr. Loo is often able to design and place a custom crown in a single visit. Here’s what that actually looks like, step by step.
Instead of biting down into a tray of impression material, we use a small handheld scanner to take a precise 3D digital scan of your tooth and bite. It’s faster, more comfortable, and more accurate than a traditional impression — and there’s nothing to hold still in your mouth while it sets.
This is the part that makes the process different from a lot of other offices. Once the scan is complete, Dr. Loo sits down and personally designs the crown using the digital model of your tooth and bite — shaping it to match your natural anatomy, not sending it off to an outside lab to be designed by someone who’s never seen your mouth.
It’s detailed, precise work, and it’s honestly a part of the job Dr. Loo enjoys most. In his free time, he plays video games — and he’ll be the first to say there’s a real overlap between that hobby and this part of dentistry. Both reward patience, attention to small details, and getting the shape of something exactly right before moving forward.
Once the design is finalized, the crown is milled right in our office while you wait. There’s no lab turnaround, and in many cases, no temporary crown needed in the meantime.
Same-day crowns work well for most common cases, but not every situation qualifies. Larger restorations, implant crowns, and certain lab-made crowns may still require multiple visits to get the best long-term result. Dr. Loo will always let you know upfront what makes sense for your specific tooth.
